Who can join the Society?

A claims law designation from American Educational Institute (AEI) is required for membership in the Society. AEI is the premier provider of claims law and coverage courses in the insurance industry through college level, work related, independent study courses. Upon completing AEI programs, students earn industry recognized designations and awards. AEI’s highest designation for educational achievement is the Senior Claim Law Associate (SCLA) designation, but membership in the Society is not limited to those who have earned the SCLA designation. Associate and Specialist designation holders are also eligible to join the Society.

Thousands of skilled claims professionals have earned AEI designations and awards. Designees are encouraged to use their designation in their professional capacity. This can include signature lines on correspondence, business cards, professional resumes, and bylines on claim law articles authored by designees. Using your designation will help facilitate industry awareness of the Society and highlight the value of the designation.

Annual Dues and Member Benefits

Dues are $70 per year. Upon joining, members receive a dues acknowledgment that includes a receipt of payment, a membership certificate (suitable for framing), a member I.D. number that allows access to the “Member Services” section of the Society Website, and the latest information regarding the Claims Education Conference. The Member Services section of the website is available only to dues-paid members of the Society and includes a Membership Directory, Claims Law Guide, and Reading Room.

  • Membership Directory: The membership directory allows members to network with each other. If you know a member’s last name, you can obtain that member’s contact information, or you can sort the member database to obtain the names of other members in a specific state who adjust a specific line of coverage.
  • Claims Law Guide: The Claims Law Guide includes relevant claims law information for each state and the District of Columbia. The Guide is revised annually by the professional staff of American Educational Institute, but members are encouraged to notify the Society of any amendments in the law as soon as they become aware of a change. We call this the Law Watch Program – a program designed to tap into the knowledge and expertise of individual members and then share that information with the general membership. Members may report changes in the law by downloading, printing, completing, and faxing a Law Watch Fax Cover Sheet along with any supporting documentation to (908) 766-9710 or e-mail the information to scla@aeiclaimslaw.com. A Law Watch Fax Cover Sheet can be downloaded from the Claims Law Guide in the Member Services section of this website.
  • Reading Room: The reading room provides members with an online library of claims law articles, which are past editions of AEI’s Claims Law Update.

Annual Claims Education Conference: The Annual Claims Education Conference and Designation Conferment offers claims professionals a claims relevant education program, networking opportunities, and conferment ceremony recognizing individuals for having achieved an AEI designation or award. Claims professionals will not only benefit from the educational content of the program, but will also have opportunities to network with other professionals who share their concerns and challenges. The Conference is open to all claims professionals.

Administration and Membership

The Society is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of six members elected for a two-year term.  The Board includes the President, Executive Vice President, Vice President – Administration, Treasurer, Immediate Past President and the AEI appointed trustee. The AEI Trustee appoints a member of the AEI professional staff to serve as Executive Director and Board Secretary. Although the Executive Director and Board Secretary is a member of the Board of Trustees he or she has no vote.
